Moving - Something to DIY or Hire the Experts?

Moving - Something to DIY or Hire the Experts?  I had to move last week, and it made me wonder - is it really worth moving yourself?  I rented a UHaul, which cost me about $170 in rental costs, mileage and gas.  I also paid 2 guys to help me, $10 per hour each for 8 hours.  My total cost was $330.  I had gotten a quote from a mover of $600 to do the move for me.

I thought it might be worth the $270 in savings to do the move myself.  I thought wrong.  I found out it Movingtakes more time to think about the move, than to actually do the move!  I often found myself stopping to figure out:

  • How do I get that out of the house?
  • How am I going to take it apart?
  • How am I going to pick it up?
  • How am I going to carry it so that I don't scuff the walls?
  • How am I going to fit everything into the truck?
  • How am I going to strap things in the truck?
  • How am I going to get that into the house?
  • How am I going to put it back together?

I know what my time is worth, and in the end, I don't think it was worth the headache to move myself.  What do you think?
